Public Education Discussions Goes to School Council
Extensive Eltham High School consultation regarding the school's response to the Public Education: The Next Generation document goes to School Council for adoption tomorrow. The response is a vision of Eltham High School as it can be in the future and provides a clear statement of direction for our school within a high quality public education system. A draft of the response is available on the school website (www.elthamhs.vic.edu.au) and the final response will be available from there on Thursday this week. Thank you to all the parents, students and teachers who have contributed to this response.
The First Year
This week brings to an end my first year as Principal of Eltham High School. This last twelve months has been an exciting, challenging and professionally fulfilling time. I would like to thank the many parents who have helped me to settle into the school and who have provided support and encouragement to me as I have come to grips with the challenges of the job. Thank you.

Victorian Schools Cross Country
Championships
Five Eltham High School students competed in the 2000 Victorian Schools Cross Country Championships held at Bundoora Park on Saturday 17th June. In perfect conditions for Cross Country racing, the five Eltham High School students did extremely well in the large and competitive fields. These events were a Selection Trial for the 2000 Australian Schools Cross Country at Yarra Bend Park, Melbourne on the 5th August. Year 12 students, James Attard and Kathy Young are both likely to gain selection as a result of their runs on Saturday.
Kathy Young (GU18 had a setback when she was forced out of the 4km event at the first turn through a series of mishaps as the large field jostled for position and Kathy was sent to the turf and lost a shoe. The Athletics Victoria officials were sympathetic to her plight and agreed to a request for her to take part in the following event - the Girls Under 20 6km CC. To her credit, Kathy recovered her composure and ran an excellent race to finish in 8th position.
James Attard gained Eltham HS's top position in recent years when he finished in 4th position in the Boys U20 8km event. James worked himself through the field in the four lap race to be in medal contention in the last lap, but had to settle for fourth in the race home over the last kilometer.
Full results were:
Stefan Courtot Boys U14 3km 25th (166 in race)
Nicholas Laurence Boys U17 6km 39th (102)
Kathy Young Girls U20 6km 8th (38 in race)
Cameron Laurence Boys U20 8km 28th (65 )
James Attard Boys U20 8km 4th (65 in race)
Year 7 Girls and Boys Soccer
Eltham High School fielded both a Girls and Boys Soccer team in the Diamond Valley Sporting District's Round-Robin held at Gabonia Reserve, Greensborough on Wednesday 14th June.
The Boys team lost each of their two matches 0-1 against St Helena and Montmorency. Max Law-Sparkes, Asher Carter and Callum Poliness provided a strong defence against some talented opposition players. Both matches were played in good spirit and the Eltham team gave a good account of itself. Other team members were: Thomas Gould, Kent O'Hannessian, Tyson Lopez, Chris Watts, Peter
Poposki, Matthew Sairle, Alistair Mason, Callum Robinson, Tim Ritchie, Tim Moulas, Tristan Crellin and Harry Hicks. The Girls team won their first match against St Helena 1-0. Maddy Spawton gave the team plenty of drive from the centre and scored the winning goal in the second half. In the second match against Montmorency, it was Shilo Neilson who seized her opportunity and scored the winning goal. In both matches, Amber Lane, Cassie Pankhurst and Lauren Batty worked well in defence, while goal-keeper Erica Marsom made several great saves. Other team members were: Sally Van der Zwart, Suzanne Smith, Jenni Lonsdale, Maree Lachmund, Lauri Fisher and Ellisha Matheson. The Girls team will play Diamond Valley SC this Thursday afternoon.
Thanks to Middle School students, Andy Demetrius and Pierre Labigang for their assistance in coaching both teams as well as to Mr Nicholson for refereeing every match. Max Balchin
Northern Zone Cross Country
Eltham High School will have six students competing at the VSSSA Cross Country Championships to be held on Tuesday July 11th, following a very successful day at the Northern Zone Finals. The finals were held at Lords Raceway, Junortoun, Bendigo on Monday 19th June. The races started at the trotting track and headed through an adjoining State Forest before looping back to finish at the trotting track. Competitors found the course a fair challenge and the weather was ideal for cross country racing.
Kathy Young won the Girls U21 3.2km event in a time of 13:55. Kathy ran a good tactical race and only took the lead in the final stages of the race. Nicholas Laurence was the other placegetter in the Eltham team when he finished in 3rd place in a very competitive Boys U16 field. Other Eltham HS students to make it through to the VSSSA CC Championships were: Brooke Palmer, Lindsay Parsons, Cameron Laurence and Scott Wheeler. James Attard, who was unable to race at Bendigo is another likely starter for Eltham High School.
Results from Bendigo were as follows:
