Music Support Group News...

Congratulations to all the students and music staff for providing us with two wonderful nights of entertainment at the Mid Year Music Concerts last week.  The hard work and dedication of our teachers continues to take our children's musical abilities to new levels.

Thankyou to our 'stage crew' for their hard work over the two evenings and congratulations to the winners of the gourmet hampers!

Our next meeting is the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING to be held on THURSDAY 17TH JULY at 8PM in the school library.  This is on the same evening as Parent Teacher interviews for the music department.  We look forward to new members - vital if we are to continue to give the level of support we do for the program.

Any queries, please ring Jill Browne on 9439 9673.

Vale Hayden Curtis

We were all saddened to hear of the tragic death of former student Hayden Curtis. Hayden began his time at Eltham High School in 1995 and completed Year 12 in 2000. The school was represented at Hayden’s funeral.

End of Term Arrangements

Classes finish this Friday at 2:20 pm for the term holiday. Term 3 begins on Monday, 14th July.

Mid Year Music Concerts

I was privileged to attend the second Mid Year Music Concert last Wednesday. Congratulations to all the students and their teachers. To hear the massed Concert and Symphonic Bands was indeed a treat.

Kitty-Belle Cabaret

Over three hundred and fifty people were entertained at the Kitty-Belle Cabaret last Thursday evening. Congratulation to the students who devised, arranged and produced this outstanding piece of theatre. A wonderful success.

State School Improvisation Games Finals

Tonight Eltham High School hosts the inaugural State Improvisation Games Final. I wish our team well in this exciting new event.

Working Bee

My thanks to the parents who attended the Working Bee last Sunday. In particular I would like to thank staff member, Mr John Coates, for his sterling efforts to ensure that our environment is the best possible for the students.

Finally …

I hope that you all have a very pleasant end of term break and that you are able to enjoy the company of your children over the next two weeks. It has been a very busy term and I know that VCE students will welcome a break from class and the opportunity for extended study. I look forward to a positive Term 3 for all members of the Eltham High School community.

Paul Rose, Principal.

Mid Year Concerts

On Monday and Wednesday evenings of last week the Music Department held two concerts at Yarra Valley Anglican School.  Featuring all of the performing ensembles in the programme, these concerts are one of the highlights of the Department’s busy schedule and proved to be a huge success.  On Monday evening the junior ensembles all performed very well with the Jazz Band demonstrating some energetic playing and the Junior Choir displaying the hard work that they have undertaken this year.  The Concert Strings, Training and Intermediate Bands all provided enjoyable performances and thanks should go to all of the directors for their preparation of the groups.  Gemma Aldred and Emily Hodge are also to be congratulated on their contribution to the evening as VCE soloists. The Senior Groups provided a fabulous night of music on Wednesday night with all groups performing to a very high standard.

The highlight was definitely the combined Concert and Symphonic band’s opening of the second half of the concert with the beautiful piece Ammerland, while the percussion ensemble thrilled with their unique body percussion piece.  Congratulations to all groups and directors for their great contribution and to Ashlee Bain and Brad Dupuy on their performances as VCE soloists.

Clasax Performance Competitions

On Saturday the 21st many of our senior students participated in the Clarinet and Saxophone Society Performance competitions. It was held in the beautiful new music facility at Scotch College and all students involved performed very well.

1st - Saxophone Ensemble

2nd- Clarinet Choir

3rd- Clarinet Quartet: Ilona Day, Lane Schlotterlein, Amy Poole and Rebecca Norman.

In the 18 Years and under section Tom Fisher gained a second place.

Congratulations should go to all students who participated – Ashlee Bain, Emily Hodge, Amy Poole, Ilona day, Lane Schlotterlein, Rebecca Norman, Claire Samphier, Leonie Davis. Tammy Yeo, Prue Humber, Eloise Norman, Brad Dupuy, Tom Fisher, Cara Skeen, Marc Heenan, Nick Jameson, Jarrid Ohannessien and Kate Van Noorden. Hindmarsh Landcare Network

Landcare Weekend - 16th & 17th August 2003

Hindmarsh Landcare Network invites you to the 6th annual ever-popular weekend based at the Whimpey’s famous Little Desert Lodge, just south of Nhill.

This year we will focus on Landcare issues within the region.  Planting sites will be mostly on private properties where Land care members are working hard to reduce the effects of salinity.  Your work will help the farmers meet their aims and contribute to re-establishing natural vegetation.  You will also meet the farmers and learn first hand what has been achieved so far and their future plans.

The other site is Snape Reserve, a 500ha property purchased by Trust for Nature for conservation and restoration of its valuable ecosystem.

What was promised weather wise as rain, hail and misery did not eventuate on Sunday thankfully, and over 50 parents, students and teachers combined to produce some impressive outcomes for the environment of the school.  Enthusiasm and hard work were evident throughout the morning and all tasks set were thoroughly completed.  It must be report time the way I am writing this; an A+ result all round.

Volleyball Banner Competition-please enter!

We are currently running a banner competition to collect ideas for an Eltham High banner that will represent Eltham High in the opening ceremony at National Schools Cup this year. We have been underwhelmed by the number of entries so far. Any students, parents or teachers that may have an idea for the banner should draw the design on an A4 sheet and deposit it in the box outside the PE office in the stadium.  The winning design will be announced at the end of term and the winner will win a prize pack including a clock radio along with some other great prizes.

The banner must have ‘Eltham High Volleyball’ incorporated into the design.

We have had two entries!!! We’re excited
