Term 2 Week 1 Tues 13th
April 2010
Reminder for Junior School:
Students in Yr 7 & 8 will have Progress Interviews on Thursday April 15 from 4-7pm – student interview appointment booking sheets have been distributed.
Student reports are available to parents online – accessible via the intranet and your student ID.
Start of Term 2
I take this opportunity to welcome all students and staff to Term 2. I trust that each of you has had a restful break and I look forward to working with you all as this term unfolds. Unlike Term 1, this term is an extended term of 11 weeks duration and there is quite a bit of work ahead of us. In particular, a number of VCE students will be undertaking mid-year exams and hence a consolidated effort needs to take place to ensure that the appropriate preparation for these exams is in place. Teachers will continue to work very hard in support of their students’ preparation for this examination period. Similar efforts need to be considered by all students in all other year levels with the approach of the end of semester 1. This is a time when any perceived difficulties or concerns need to be clarified to ensure that every child has the best opportunity to achieve their very best. The partnership between the student, teacher and home is of crucial importance. We will continue to endeavour to maintain open communication with parents and I strongly encourage parents to remain in communication with us in relation to their child’s learning needs. I look forward to a very satisfying Term 2.
Student Achievement
I wish to congratulate Kristina Gorgievska who on Saturday, 27 March attended the Public Education Forum in Canberra. Kristina represented Eltham High School, as well as Victoria at the Forum. I know that Kristina has been an outstanding ambassador for both our school and the State as exemplified in the following feedback which I received from a Principal Class colleague who was present at the Forum:
“Kristina Gorgievska did a fantastic job speaking about the value of a Government school education and in particular, Eltham. I heard other people in the audience commenting about her great speech and also what a good school Eltham is. Please let Kristina know how impressed we all were with her. She was a great advocate for Eltham High School and government school education.”
Congratulations to our Year 8 students who were selected to
represent Victoria in the Under 15 Australian Volleyball Championships in
Albury during the holidays. The students selected for the girls’ team were
Louise Alford, Lucy Boyes and Gabby Seymour and the boys’ team were Jack
Killeen and Sam Richards. Both these teams won their competitions and
contributed to Victoria winning the overall Best State Trophy. The experience
has provided our students with an opportunity to both display and improve their
skills in the sport. Once again, I congratulate their school based coaches
and wish the students and their school teams the very best in future
competitions.
I also wish to congratulate Sophie Paine of Year 12 who is a member of our Senior Girls’ Volleyball Team and has just been named Vice-Captain of the Australian Junior Women’s’ Volleyball Team. Sophie and her team will represent Australia at the Asian Championships in Kuala Lumpur later in the year. I wish Sophie and her team all the very best with the upcoming competitions which we will follow with interest.
Student Progress Interviews
The Senior and Middle School student progress interviews that took place on Wednesday, 24 March were very well attended. I wish to thank all parents who made the effort to attend the interviews and gain direct feedback on their child’s progress. I also wish to thank all staff for their preparation for this day. I remind parents that the Junior School student progress interviews will take place this Thursday, 15 April starting at 4:00pm. Please ensure that your child has made the appropriate appointments on your behalf so that your interviews can proceed smoothly and in a timely fashion. We are currently working on introducing an on‑line booking process for the next round of student progress interviews which will take place during Term 3.
Prospective Year 7 Enrolments 2011
The Eltham High School Year 7 2011 Information Evening will take place on Thursday, 22 April at 7:30pm. This will be followed by an Open Morning on Friday, 23 April. There will be an opportunity to be part of school tours on that morning and to see the school in action during a normal school day. A range of other tours have been taking place since mid Term 1 and they will continue until after the Information Evening. If you would like to attend one of these tours please ensure that you contact the General Office on 9430 5111 to book in. If you are aware of any families who are interested in joining our learning community I ask you to pass on this information to them, and to encourage them to attend both the Information Evening and one of the tours, if they are not able to join us on the Open Morning. I thank you in anticipation for your support for this.
Anzac Day Memorial Ceremony
Our Anzac Day Memorial Ceremony will take place on Friday, 23 April during Period 6, which will begin at 2:20pm. This has now become part of the culture of the school and it is important for us as a community to acknowledge people who have lost their lives in war. If anyone would like to attend the ceremony, I ask you to contact Kate Scalzo on 9430 5111.
Staff Changes
I wish Brenda Wilkins (Receptionist) all the very best during her period of leave during this term. I hope that she will have a well-deserved break and enjoy all of the adventures she and her husband have planned over the next few months.
I welcome Paula Hogan to the front reception. Paula is replacing Brenda during her leave and will be there to welcome you when you visit the school.
