Principal’s Report

Year 12 Valedictory Night:

I congratulate all year 12 students on their completion of VCE. Last night was the Year 12 Valedictory Night, a night of celebration and recognition of the achievements of our Year 12 students. This evening marked a new beginning, one filled with great hope and aspiration for our students and for the wonderful things that will come their way. We look to these young people as our future leaders in a myriad of fields working locally, nationally and internationally and in so doing taking the name of Eltham High School with them throughout their endeavours. In becoming past students they also become lifelong members of the Eltham High School Community.  Past students are very much part of the culture of Eltham High School. The class of 2010 too will become part of this culture building process as they return to us over the years to share their stories. Throughout the evening we recognized each student and his/her achievements through the presentation of certificates, prizes and gifts. The following demonstrate some examples of this recognition:

I wish to personally acknowledge the ongoing commitment of a highly professional group of people, the teachers and support staff at Eltham High School. The Year 12 teachers continued the work and enhanced the learning that had been instituted by teachers in the pre-VCE years. I thank them all for their unfailing support of our young people.

Furthermore, I wish to acknowledge the work, commitment and support provided to the students by the Senior Sub-School Team: Mrs Diane Parry, Mr Jim Petridis, Miss Michelle Harper, Mr John Elordieta under the leadership of Mrs. Anna Panas. Without their passion and ongoing effort what has been achieved could not have been achieved to the same level.

Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar:

Kwong Lee Dow scholarships are awarded by the University of Melbourne to Year 10 students who demonstrate outstanding academic results and leadership skills. Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars retain their status through their Year 11 and 12 studies and the first year of university should they choose to enroll at the University of Melbourne. The program assists students to achieve their full potential through creating a network and community of students who engage with the University and each other through an extensive range of events and activities.

In 2010 the nominees for the scholarship from Eltham High School were Madeleine Dawson, Zoe Gerardson, Emmet Scanlan, Ariel Skippen and Rose Wilson-Harrison. We congratulate each of them on their nomination. Last week we were very pleased to learn that Rose Wilson-Harrison had been successful in gaining a place in the program. Congratulations to Rose, her endeavours in the music program, helping re-establish the Environment Club and her work in the Anthology committee make her a very worthy recipient of the scholarship.

Eltham High School Swim Team Lap-a-thon:

Congratulations to all the students (past, present and prospective) and staff who participated in the 2010 Lap-a-thon on Thursday 18 November, at the Eltham Leisure Centre. It was a great effort with the top lap count of 164 laps in the hour allocated going to Emily Voss. Overall the group swam over 40 kilometres. The funds raised will be donated as Christmas gifts to the Smith Family for distribution as appropriate. This was a true sign of student leadership, student voice and an outstanding success. A real credit to all involved!

2011 Orientation Programs:

The Year 11 to Year 12 orientation program is well under way. Student began their engagement with this from Monday 22 November and this will continue throughout this week. This will be followed by the Year 10 to Year 11 Orientation program. It is imperative that all students attend the program to gain full benefit from the experience and to begin their preparation for 2011.

Building works:

The Building Contractors will be taking possession of the site over this week, installing the cyclone fencing to secure the site. As this occurs access to various areas of the school may change, the car park outside the front office will be out of bounds and access to the General Office can be gained from the Ely Street end of the school on foot only.  The circular drive for the drop off and pick up of students will remain open, see the map below for guidance. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the General Office on 9430 5111.

en00501_MUSICAL NOTES

Dates to remember ... December 3rd is the last day of instrumental lessons.  November 26th is the Strings Soiree at 5pm in the main rehearsal room.  December 2nd is the Twilight Concert where all our ensembles are involved - a 6.30pm start with a touch of Christmas, in the courtyard.

Remember the music support group's Second Hand Instrument Register is available for sales. If you have an instrument it needs to be checked by a staff member and the cost of 'registering' it is $10.  Then, hopefully a new student in our program in 2011 will purchase it!

Any queries, contact the music office on 9430 5127.
