Term 4 Week 11 - Tue

Term 4 Week 11 - Tue 14th December 2010
I congratulate the class of 2010 on their results. Students received their results on Monday 13 December and I know that amongst the cohort there will have been a large number of very happy students. I also acknowledge that amongst the group there would have been some who are disappointed with their results, as there are each year. It is important that students access the support that the school is able to offer them. Mr Goddard is available to guide them with any decisions that they need to make. The top ATAR score for 2010 was 99.3. More on this in 2011.
End of Year program:
The end of Year program is progressing smoothly and I wish to thank all the students and parents who have supported the initiative. It is our intention to survey the students on the last day to gain insight into the success of the program as well as in identifying any changes that need to be made for the following year. As indicated to the students, absences will be followed up. If absent, students are expected to bring a note from home explaining their absence as is the normal process. Any unexplained absences will be followed up.
Volleyball National Competition:
Congratulations to the sixteen teams that participated in the National Volleyball Competitions at MSAC and the State Volleyball Centre throughout last week. I was fortunate enough to attend at MSAC last Thursday and to watch a number of our teams winning games. The competition this year was fierce and our teams came home with two bronze medals and a number of places just out of a medal. I know that whilst the week was hard work all the students and their coaches had a great time representing our school. It’s not always about winning. Competing with dignity and pride brings about very satisfying outcomes. I thank all the staff who participated in the week as well as all those staff who supported the program by taking extra classes back at school. I wish to thank Mr Greg Thomas for his leadership of the program and for his continued encouragement of our students and staff.
Year 9 Work Experience:
Year 9 students have embarked on their second week of Work Experience. Members of staff have been very busy visiting students in their work experience placement and each one of them has reported something positive from their visit. Students are enjoying their placements and employers are happy with the commitment and quality of work of our students. I trust that they will continue to have a positive experience throughout this week.
I congratulate the following staff who will be retiring as of the start of the new school year:
Mrs Liz Lacey, Mr Peter Goddard, Mr Michael Darling and Mr Peter Webster. I acknowledge their work as teachers at Eltham High School over many years and thank them for their outstanding contribution to the education of our young people and to government school education. In particular, Peter Goddard has served as the Careers Coordinator for a number of years and his hard work and enterprise has seen the introduction of a number of programs such as the Year 10 Portfolio Day and the continuation of such initiatives as the Careers Nights in addition to the Work Experience Program that has benefitted our students. I wish them all the very best as they move into the next phase of their lives.
I also wish to acknowledge the retirement of Mr Michael Pagan (Laboratory Technician). Michael has been with us for a number of years and he has made a great contribution to the Science Department. In addition to carrying out his day-to-day work supporting the preparation of the practical component of the science program, Michael has been the designer and creator of a range of pieces of equipment that have served the science staff and students for many years. His technical skills and talent have provided the servicing of equipment and repairs that would have cost the school a fortune. I wish Michael all the best and on behalf of our learning community I thank him for his outstanding contribution over the years.
I congratulate Ms Therese Sweeney who will be moving into a Leading Teacher position (a promotion) as Head of Science at McKinnon Secondary College. Ms Sweeney has been a staff member at Eltham High School for many years and I wish to thank her for her outstanding contribution to the science program and the young people in her care. I wish her all the very best in her new role. I also thank Mr Anthony Condon, whose contract position has come to an end and wish him all the very best with his new adventure teaching in the Northern Territory.
A number of staff will also be on leave during 2011 including: Mr Glen Pearsall, Ms Elizabeth Campbell, Mrs Kylie McColl, and Mr Chris LaRosa. I wish them all a very satisfying and productive period of leave. Ms Rai Jones and Ms Jane Thomas will also be on family leave and I wish them all the very best as they prepare for the birth of their children. I also wish Mr John Coates, Mr Seamus Robertson and Mrs Jeanette Carter a relaxing time during their Term 1 leave. As always I will be introducing all new staff to you in the first edition of the Community Newsletter for 2011.
Best Wishes for the Festive Season:
As the year draws to a close, I thank all members of our learning community for their ongoing support throughout 2010. I wish all our students, parents, families and staff a wonderful Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. I hope that everyone will be able to have a very relaxing break and I encourage our students, in particular those in the senior years, to spend some time preparing for 2011. However, it is important that you take time out and have fun. Please keep safe and think about the decisions and choices that you make. I look forward to our work together in 2011. All the best!

1. Essential education items
2. Optional extras
3. Voluntary financial contributions.
