Principal’s Report

Exceptional Music:

I was very fortunate to attend a number of performances at the Royal South Street Eisteddfod over the last weekend and once again I was in awe of the high level of skill and talent of our students and staff. I was in the audience during the Saturday evening concert to hear a number of outstanding bands perform and I have to say that the performance of our Symphonic Band was nothing short of brilliant. I take this opportunity to congratulate all the students in the Music program as well as their teachers and conductors; you continue to make us proud. Individual band, choir and ensemble performance results appear in a further section of this newsletter.

If you wish to experience what I am talking about then it is a must that you attend the “Celebration of Music Concert” on Monday 19 September. Further information is available in this newsletter. This is an event not to be missed and I look forward to seeing you all there. I will take the opportunity at this concert to acknowledge the exceptional work of the Music Staff, their overwhelming commitment and that of our students.

Student Achievement:

I congratulate Rebecca van Gemert (Year 12, Rutter House) who on Saturday 20th August was part of a unique performance with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.  The Orchestra held a Beethoven Festival where it performed all of Beethoven’s nine symphonies.

Beethoven was completely deaf when he composed the 9th Symphony, so as well as the Orchestra and a 500 piece choir; the performance included a 40 piece Auslan Signing Choir to sign the words to the Ode to Joy - the best known section of the symphony. Rebecca was selected as a member of the Auslan Signing Choir.

Rebecca is studying VCE Auslan as an external subject and this has given her the opportunity to be part of a fabulous event as well as test her signing skills as part of this fantastic group. In congratulating Rebecca on her achievement I take this opportunity to wish her all the very best with her studies of Auslan and her future career path.

Senior Basketball:

Congratulations to the Senior Girls Basketball Team that performed admirably in the State Final last Tuesday night, 1 September. Whilst the team did not win the final, it has worked very hard to achieve this high level of success and each member needs to be commended for her effort. In congratulating the girls, I also congratulate their coach, Mr David Allender for his initiative, hard work and commitment to supporting the ongoing success of the program. A job well done by all!

Confirmation of Assistant Principal Appointments:

At the conclusion of the Appeals Process I am very pleased to inform our community that the two new Assistant Principal appointments have been confirmed as of Friday 2 September. I congratulate Ms Fran Mullins (currently, Assistant Principal at Fitzroy High School) and Mr Tim Natoli (Currently Leading Teacher – Middle School Leader at Balwyn High School) on their respective appointment. Fran and Tim will take up their appointment at Eltham High School as of 1st January 2012. The selection panel was very impressed by the level of interest and the high standard of applicants for the position. I take the opportunity to thank all the applicants for their time in the preparation of their application and the short-listed candidates for their preparation for and attendance at interview. Further, I thank all the members of the selection panel for their hard work and commitment to the process. In particular I wish to acknowledge the hard work, commitment and professionalism of the Student Selection Panel that interviewed each of the short-listed candidates (Ben Hague – panel chairperson [Year 12, Andrew House]; Sarah Klink [Year 11, Rutter House]; Samantha Stevens [Year 10, Andrew House]; Scott van Gemert [Year 9, Rutter House]. They were excellent representatives of the student body and outstanding ambassadors for our school. We will formally welcome Fran and Tim to our school and community in the near future.

Junior and Middle School Student Progress Interviews:

I would like to thank all members of our community that provided constructive feedback on the most recent process of on-line bookings for student progress interviews. Overall, the initiative was very well received by all and suggestions for improvement will be acted upon for the next round of interviews. I wish to thank all the members of the e-Learning Team that contributed to the implementation of the new process and the Compass team for its support as required.

A reminder about Student Safety:

I ask all members of our community to take great consideration around student safety during peak traffic times of the day; the morning drop off and the afternoon pick-up.

There is a weekly report in the newsletter as to what work is planned to be carried out over the following week in relation to the building works and how this will affect the traffic management system particularly at the Withers Way entrance of the school. I ask that all parents who drive their children to school make a point to read this so that you are informed of what is happening and how this may affect you. Student safety is the number one priority and once again I ask you for your support.

It is important that you support your child’s timely arrival to school of a morning. There have been a number of occasions of late when parents arrive at the front of the school close to 9:00 am or even later; classes start at 8:55 am, the warning bell for period 1 sounds at 8:45 am, every child should be in the school by this time. Late arrivals tend to cause a level of panic in both the driver and the student and safety is often compromised.

In order to minimize the amount of traffic during the period of the building program, if your child can arrive at school via some other means outside of being driven to the school I ask that you encourage them to do so. If you must drive and pick up your child from school then I ask that you plan with your child where an appropriate and safe drop-off and pick-up point might be. I suggest that you consider the Ely Street end of the school or some other place close by which alleviates you having to drive right up to the front gate of the school.

I remind all drivers that the maximum speed in the area of the school is 40 Kph and inform you that both the police and the traffic officers from the Shire of Nillumbik have begun patrolling the area of the school during peak times to help deter reckless driving and unlawful parking.

It has been reported to me that recently fines have been imposed by the police and the Traffic Officers from the Shire of Nillumbik.

Congratulations to the following girls who represented the school in the State Final on Tuesday –

Jackie Smith                 Sarah Heath

Tenille Said                   Mia Heath

Tess Norman                 Ella Heaney

Tessa Mitchell               Hayley Deards

Claire Alford                  Maddie Flood

The girls played against Rowville High School and Ballarat High School. In the first game the girls got off to a fantastic start to lead 12 - 2 at quarter time. Unfortunately the girls were down 16-14 at the half. The girls fought on to lose the game by just 4 points in a very close encounter against last years State Champions.

In the second game the girls played against Ballarat High School and led by 8 points at half time. Unfortunately a number of 'incidents' in the second half caused them to go down by 3 points (even after three 3 pointers from Jackie Smith in the final minute).

This Senior Girls team has achieved so much this year and I would like to thank all of them for their contributions.

We look forward to continued success of the basketball program for the rest of the year.

MOSAIC PROJECT – Community Recover

Certificates of achievement were handed out at the Junior School Assembly on Tuesday 6th Sept to all students who participated in the beginning of the mosaic project which started with the yr 7 and 8's in term 1; continued with the yr 9 and 10's in term 2. The middle school panels will finally be erected on Wednesday this week.

Thanks to the support of Ben Dawes and his VCAL helpers, and Oscar Vitez.

Also thanks to CAVE (Community and Volunteers of Eltham) who provided funding for materials and Yeomans Tiles of Eltham who provided additional tiles grout and adhesive. A special thank you to all staff who allowed students to miss classes to participate in the project.

Watch this space for dates of the community involvement phase of the project in term 4, hopefully with some involvement from staff and senior students.

Louise Heathcote (Student Support) is still collecting names of interested people for this next phase of the project, please email your interest to hea@elthamhs.vic.edu.au

Louise Heathcote (Student Support / Bush fire recovery) and Kerry Kaskamanidis (Art Therapist)

At the start of term 2, a group of student leaders from Junior and Middle school, came together to collaborate on ideas for a new mosaic project to be put up in the arts and technology courtyard, to reflect the devastating 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires. From then, other students who were interested or had a connection with the fires were asked to partake in the design and construction processes.

The Junior School Mosaic constructed in the last 4 weeks of term 2, depicted many scenes of regrowth, remembrance, recovery and other symbols linked to the fires. All students who partook were able to have their own ideas somewhere in the mural, with each panel linked in some way or another.

So far, both Junior and Middle schools separate projects have been erected on the north side of the courtyard with a new project hopefully being started on the south side.

Dylan, Liam, Siggy, Jordie, Mariah, Rhys, Maggie, Nada, Hana, Sophie, Jasmine, Ashlee, Hugh, Kyle and Leia.
