In particular I wish to congratulate Isabella Mulholland who was awarded a High Distinction in the competition and is placed in the top 1% of students in her year level across Australia. Furthermore I congratulate Jack Liu for being the Prudence Award winner. The Prudence Award is given to the student who has achieved the highest number of consecutive correct results.

These students and the others who participated in the competition have excelled in the academic arena and have demonstrated that they live the school value of the “Pursuit of Excellence”. We are very proud of them.

School Sport Victoria, Secondary State Track and Field Championships:

Whilst a very detailed report appears in a further section of this week’s newsletter I want to personally congratulate all the students who once again represented our school in such an admirable way in these championships. A number of medals came home after the event and our students performed brilliantly. In particular I wish to acknowledge the outstanding achievement of Lachlan Dalgleish who not only won two medals but was also awarded the prize for the “most Inspirational Athlete” of the meet. Lachlan is an outstanding role model and we should all draw inspiration from his efforts. In congratulating the students I also want to acknowledge the work of their coaches, parents and teachers who through their support and encouragement allow these young people to reach their full potential.

Annual Lapathon:

The Eltham High School Swim Squad will be running its annual Lapathon. This is a major fundraising effort directly aligned with our school value of “Social Responsibility”. In the past the funds raised through this effort have supported the Smith Family and more recently Local Primary Schools that were affected by the Back Saturday bushfires. This year it has been decided that the funds will go to supporting the work of Oxfam. I urge you to be very generous in your support of our young people by sponsoring them and the staff who participate in this yearly event. This year the Lapathon will take place on the 24 November in the Eltham Leisure Centre pool starting at 7:30 am.

Eltham High School Community Choir:

The Eltham High School Community Choir is a reality. I congratulate everyone who faced their fears and attended the first meeting. It was a vibrant night with lots of fun. I congratulate our Director of Music, Mr Mark Shiell for his vision and for living our school motto “Deeds Count”. See you all there.

PERSONAL LEARNING DEVICES (NOTEBOOK)

Dear Parents,

The Federal Government has provided funding for 1:1 computer access for students from years 9 to 12.

In relation to this funding the school has started several initiatives to provide student access to Personal Learning Devices (Notebook) in 2012 and beyond.

Students in years 9 and 10 will be provided with their own device at the start of 2012, while years 11 and 12 will have dedicated access through existing and upgraded computer labs.

Students in year 7 and 8, although not catered for with the Federal Funding initiative, will have the option to engage with their own Personal Learning Device (Notebook) through a parent contribution arrangement that will run for 3 years.

To support the implementation of these initiatives information will be provide through the following information nights:

Year 9/10 in 2012 – Tuesday 22nd November

Year 8 in 2012 – Thursday 24th November

Year 7 in 2012 – Information Evening – Wednesday 7th December

ATHLETICS

Twelve Eltham High School students competed at the School Sport Victoria, Secondary State Track & Field Championships held at the new athletics facility at Albert Park on Tuesday 25th October. These students had won the right to be in the State finals by having been successful in the regional finals held earlier in the year.

Lachlan Dalgleish, competing in the Shot Put and 100m for AWD - ‘Athletes with Disabilities’ in the 12-15 Years age group came away with medals for each event. Lachlan recorded a personal best performance of 4.99m in the Shot Put to win the silver medal. In the 100m, Lachlan won the bronze medal.

There was also a special presentation to Lachlan in the course of the program awarding him the ‘Most Inspirational Athlete’ of the meet. The presentation was made by Tamsyn Lewis Manou and greeted with great enthusiasm by all in attendance. We all congratulate Lachlan on this achievement.

Maddison Coates won the Silver medal in the Girls 14 Year Olds 100m. In the 200m, Maddison powered home over the final 60m to win the race in a time of 27.00.

Rory Kelham won the Boys 17 Year Olds 1500m in a time of 4:41.19. Rory made his move to the lead with 300m to go and was good enough to kick home and hold off all challenges.

Chris Moffat came away from the State Championships with a Bronze medal in both the 100m and the 400m.

Tessa Mitchell won a Bronze medal in the Girls 18-20 200m.

Tessa and Chris, in Year 12, have been regular members of EHS athletics teams over their time at EHS and are to be congratulated on being such positive role models to other students at EHS.

The EHS team finished the Championships in 15th place out of the 251 schools to send competitors. This is a great credit to all members of the EHS team.

Thanks go to Ms Lucy Bowman for her organisation and leadership (not to mention bus driving!).

ARISE PROGRAM

Once a week for the past term, seven students as part of the Arise programme have been going to Concord School for students with special needs. The Eltham High School students have been contributing to the help of a range of students through some of their classes. Some of the subjects include Maths, English and specialised areas such as Sport and Music. Getting involved with the kids has really installed a sense of leadership and direction into a lot of the Arise students. The Eltham High students are now planning to build a 3D mosaic to be placed at the front of Concord. A large group of Middle School students from Concord based in the art department, are helping to build the mosaic over the course of five weeks. The students have really been enjoying their time participating in the Arise program, and getting involved with the students. Here are a few personal comments.

I really look forward to the ARIS program every week. It is a great chance to get involved with the community and meet lots of new people. - Colleen Mann.

I have been enjoying the program and helping the kids each week, I am looking forward to making the mosaic with everyone next term. Maggie Emmins

I really enjoy the program it’s a chance to meet new and different people, it also gives me a chance to help my brother who recently started school there. Tessa Rumney

This programme has been really fun and I look forward to seeing the students of Concord every week. Tayler Heaney

It is so fulfilling to help a student understand something. Riley Portman

On Friday the 9th of September, the Eltham High School Saxophone Ensemble performed for a majority of the middle school students at Concord Secondary School. Dan Carter, Tyronne Cai, Mia Howes, Matt Shackleton and Jared Becker all rocked up up to play, performing two pieces to the kids. The ensemble had recently competed in the well known Royal South Street Competition a week beforehand, and received an Honourable Mention, out of 15 other prestigious ensembles. During the performance, the kids got to explore the different types of saxophones and listen to all of the combined. Judging by the positive feedback that was given, the loved the experience.
