Principal’s Report

Malaysia Sister School Relationship:

On Friday 25 November we will be welcoming a representatives of the Department of Education from Malaysia who will be visiting us to discuss the sister school relationship that we have established with Malacca High School. We have been involved in this relationship for two years now and we have seen a number of developments over this time. To begin with we have had a number of reciprocal visits of teachers from both schools. Just recently Mrs Pompa Brady, Ms Sha Shukor and Mr Matthew Barker visited the sister school with a group of students and a couple of parents that took part in the Malaysia LOTE trip. Our group was made very welcome by members of the Malacca High School Community. Prior to this we hosted students and staff from the school as they experienced Australian culture and more specifically the Eltham High School culture. During the visit later this week we will be exploring other ways of enhancing the relationship between our two schools and communities. Of interest to Malacca High School are our Instrumental Music Program and our sports program. They also have an interest in the Arts and the enhancement of the English language amongst their students. Or interest lies in the development of a deeper understanding of Malaysian culture and the enhancement of Indonesian language. I welcome Ms Rohaida Abdul Manap, Ms Nor Aripah Ali and Ms Zaiton Abdm Hamid to our school.

World Challenge Program:

The Eltham High School contingent left for the North of India (Uttaranchal) on Sunday 20 November. The trip is an exciting opportunity for our students and one staff member to have the experience of a life time. The group will be away for approximately one month and will be involved in some construction work in a village as well as some trekking activity in the foothills of the Himalayas. The group has been preparing for this adventure for almost two years and they were very excited to be on their way. I wish the group every success with this venture and I look forward to hearing about their experiences on their return. I do wish to thank World Challenge for its support in the organization of this tour, the parents, the students and Mr Phil Boyd who is accompanying the group.

Writer’s Notebook’ – Featuring the Eltham High School Student Anthology on Channel 31:

A number of our students were filmed during term 3 for the Writer’s Notebook’ series on Channel 31. The film highlights the great work that our students have engaged in during the development of the 2011 Student Anthology. Writer’s Notebook’ is broadcast on Channel 31 each Wednesday at 4:30pm and repeated each Saturday at 8:00am, beginning Wednesday 7th December 2011. Each episode will also be available online for two days after the Wednesday broadcast, for those who miss an episode, or for those who don’t have access to C31. www.c31.org.au  ‘Catchup TV’. I take this opportunity to congratulate the students who have taken on this initiative with a great deal of passion and commitment and it is great to see that their work has been deemed worthy of a television broadcast. I wish to thank Jenny Isaac (Anthology Co-ordinator) who has provided exceptional support and ongoing encouragement to these young writers. Finally I thank Lisa Keskinen who has shown great interest in our students and staff and has selected their work for the broadcast. An outstanding effort all round.

Annual Lap-a-thon:

A reminder to all members of our community that the annual Lap-a-thon will take place on Thursday 24 November in the Eltham Leisure Centre pool starting at 7:00 am. This year it has been decided that the funds will go to supporting the work of Oxfam. I urge you to be very generous in your support of our young people by sponsoring them and the staff who participate in this yearly event.

Twilight Concert:

A reminder that the final music concert of the year will be the Twilight Concert which will take place on Monday 28 November in the central Courtyard starting at 6.30 pm. I am looking forward to favourable weather and we deserve this since in the last two years this concert had to be cancelled on the afternoon of the performance due to inclement weather. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this year will be different. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Dear Parents,

The Federal Government has provided funding for 1:1 computer access for students from years 9 to 12.

Students in year 7 and 8, although not catered for with the Federal Funding initiative, will have the option to engage with their own Personal Learning Device (Notebook) through a parent contribution arrangement that will run for 3 years.

To support the implementation of these initiatives information will be provide through the following information nights:

CRICKET

MS Inter-School Cricket

EHS took part in the Inter-School Cricket Round Robin on Thursday 17th November at Eltham Lower Park. Teams were formed from students in Year 8 and Year 9.

The Cricket Round Robin followed the Super 12’s Cricket format in which players bat in pairs for two overs regardless of how many times they go out and two bowlers alternate from the one end until they have completed their deliveries. The result is a shared involvement in both batting and bowling by all members of the team.

The EHS lost to both Diamond Valley and Montmorency. In the match against Diamond Valley, the Eltham team put up spirited resistance, despite not having a full complement of team members. The final score was Diamond Valley 68 to EHS 25.

Eltham’s second match was against a strong Montmorency line-up. The deduction of five runs from the team’s score for the loss of every wicket proved costly as the EHS batsmen went out 15 times. The resultant total of minus 17 fell well short of Montmorency’s 113 runs.

Diamond Valley went on to defeat Montmorency and will go on to play St Helena at a later date.

The EHS team members were: Blake Goodwin, Rory Newport, Max Jones, Braydon Turner, Joel Clamp, Kyle Keenan, Matt York, Trent Grindal, Dylan Griffiths.
