Principal’s Report

Student Achievement:

Congratulations to Siena Hyland (Year 8, Stewart House) who has just won a national award for her writing.  Last weekend at the Young Australian Art and Writers award Siena won the Helen Handbury Achievement Award, as well as an award sponsored by the 'Murdoch Family' for poetry.  Siena’s winning entry is a poem entitled 'Night'.  This is a wonderful recognition for a budding writer/poet and we look forward to seeing many more written works by Siena reach the same heights.  Once again, congratulations Siena!

Congratulations also to Chloe Morris (Year 11, Everard House) on her achievement on being the editor of a new book that has recently been published. The book entitled "Milanda: A tale of distant Castles" will be launched at the Eltham bookshop on 21 December 2011. This is a fantastic opportunity for a young person and we wish Chloe all the very best in the future.  Chloe is one of our young people currently on the World Challenge Expedition in Utteranchal, India. She will be returning just prior to the book’s launch.

School Sports Victoria - Volleyball:

At the School Sports Victoria Volleyball finals last week Eltham High School made history with the Year 7 Girls, Year 8 Girls and our Year 8 Boys Teams all winning;  and the Year 7 Boys Team coming a close second place.  Congratulations to all students in these teams, as well as their committed and hard working coaches. What this means is that of all eight state competitions that have been held this year, Eltham High School has won seven.  This is an outstanding achievement and an improvement on previous year’s results.  The next closest result ever achieved has been winning five out of the eight.  Well done to everyone! We look forward to some exceptional results at the National Competition in a couple of weeks’ time.

2011 Valedictory Evening:

The Year 12 Valedictory Evening took place on Wednesday, 23 November.  It was an evening filled with celebration and acknowledgement of the achievements of the Class of 2011. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive (I have been contacted by a large number of people by phone and e‑mail congratulating the school for such an outstanding evening) and a good time was had by all.  I congratulate the Class of 2011 and, in particular, our Valedictorians Hannah Beattie and Ben Hague for the way they represented the group and for their very engaging presentations.  As you will appreciate a great deal of work goes into the planning and preparation for an evening such as this and I take this opportunity to both congratulate and thank the senior school coordination team: Michelle Harper; Jim Petridis; Cindy Ahern; Jon Elordieta and Matthew Barker, under the leadership of Anna Panas.  A job well done!

2011 Lap-a-thon:

What a remarkable result!  Thirty nine people (students, staff, past and prospective students) swam a total of 3,741 laps in the allocated hour. This means an average of 96 laps per participant. However, I do want to acknowledge the outstanding effort of Kelly Voss who swam 170 laps. Overall this shows a real effort and commitment by each and everyone involved. The funds raised this year will be donated in support of the work of Oxfam in developing countries.  I congratulate and thank Neroli Nixon who would have to be the most enthusiastic, energetic and committed coach ever, as well as Lyn Davis and Max Balchin who although retired from the school keep returning to support our young people.  I also thank the parents, staff, past, current and prospective students who every Thursday morning show up to be part of the Eltham High School Swim Club experience.  I understand that sponsorship funds need to be received by the school by this Thursday, 1 December. I ask that all sponsors support our swimmers to meet this timeline so that funds can be transferred to Oxfam well before Christmas.  Anyone else who would like to make a donation can do so through the school Cashier.  Once again, thank you for your support and a big congratulations to the swimmers.

2011 Anthology:

The 2011 published Student Anthology arrived in the school on Monday, 28 November. This is once again an outstanding collection of student writing and art works compiled by the Student Anthology Committee with the wonderful support of Jenny Isaacs. This year’s publication entitled “The Dreamer’s Disease’ highlights the works of some very talented writers and artists and I commend this collection to you. If you have not ordered a copy of the Anthology I suggest that you get in quick. Additional copies are limited and you don't want to miss out.  Contact the General Office for further details.

Aus Volleyball Schools Cup - 5 days to go!

There are still some parent permission forms that have not been returned. Any students who require the necessary forms for the Australian volleyball schools cup may collect them from Mr Thomas in the PE office or from the volleyball link on the Eltham High school web page. The volleyball web page also has a blank parent permission form on it that can used for any volleyball event. So if little ‘Jimmy’ loses his permission form – you can print off a blank one and get the details off the calendar (also on the volleyball page).

Students will receive final details this week for AVSC. Please take note – all players are required at a meeting in the show court at Eltham High at 7.30 pm on Sunday 4th December for team photos.

Details of other photo options will be given out to players this week.

Copies of the draw may be available if you go to the Australian Volleyball Federation web page – www.avf.org.au  Aus volleyball schools cup – draws.

State Finals

Congratulations to our junior volleyball teams on a fine performance at the state volleyball finals on Thursday 24th November. Our year 7 boys won one and lost one to a bigger Westall team. Second in the state is a fantastic performance. Teams have to progress through four competitions to achieve a place at the School sport Victoria finals. Our year 7 girls coached by Nick Cooper, year 8 girls coached by Bree Pascoe and the year 8 boys all won the final competition to be 2011 state volleyball champions.

This year Eltham High won seven of the eight state volleyball titles on offer. A new record for the number of wins in one year. Well done to all players involved.
