Principal’s Report

Welcome to our Year 7 (2012) Students:

Today being Orientation Day, we welcomed our 2012 Year 7 students. The day was organised so that they could experience a little of what it will be like to be a secondary student and in particular a student at Eltham High School. Early in the morning and at the end of the day the Stadium was filled with a buzz of excitement. A well-organized program was in place for the students and feedback back has been overwhelmingly positive. I take this opportunity to thank Mr Ross McKinnon, Junior School Team Leader and Transition Coordinator and his team of coordinators and support staff and all the teachers who worked hard to make this day a real success for our incoming Years 7. I look forward to greeting them back on 2 February 2012, their first day of Term 1.

Australian Volleyball Schools Cup:

I congratulate all the students who participated in this year’s Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. This competition brings together the best school teams from across the country and the performance of our students is commendable, bringing home two silver and one bronze medal. I take this opportunity to thank all the teachers, current and past students who made a commitment to the program this year by coaching and/or managing a team. I also wish to thank all the parents who have also made a commitment to the sport by always being there to support our students both during practice times and competitions. The year has been filled with outstanding achievements and each and every one of you needs to be congratulated. Finally I wish to thank all the staff for their support of the program, without whole school support the program would not be what it is today. I acknowledge and commend the commitment and hard work of Mr Greg Thomas the Elite Sports Program Coordinator whom I am sure is already planning for the 2012 season.

Years 7 & 8 End of Year Program:

An outline of the 2011 end of year program is provided in a further section on this newsletter and a Letter will be distributed to every family during this week. A great deal of planning and hard work has gone into preparing for this year’s program and I ask all parents to ensure that every student in Years 7 and 8 is in attendance. The program runs from Monday 19 to Wednesday 21 December and irrespective of what your child/children may say to you these days a normal school days and attendance is compulsory. I know that your children will benefit greatly from their participation in this program and I ask you for your support with this initiative.

Years 7 & 8 (2012) Notebook initiative:

Just a reminder to parents of Years 7 & 8 (2012) students that if you are hoping to receive a notebook before the Christmas break, the closing date of payment and return of forms is Friday 16 December. Should you miss this date and still wish to take up the offer another round will be advertised in early February. It is important to understand that payment in itself won’t be sufficient to ensure the release of a notebook, the appropriate forms which have already been issued (and are available of the school webpage) must also be submitted by the closing date to receive the notebook on the 20 December. Further information on this in a later section of this newsletter.

Years 9 & 10 (2012) Notebook initiative:

It is envisaged that Notebooks will be distributed to Years 9 and 10 students early in Term 1, 2012. However, parents and students are reminded that Notebooks will not be released unless the appropriate forms have been returned. Whilst I am sure that most of you have already seen to this there are still some forms outstanding. I strongly encourage you to return these forms before the end of this year to ensure that you will be able to receive your notebook as they are being distributed rather than having to wait. Forms are to be returned to the General Office.

Overseas Student Exchange:

On Tuesday 29 November two of our current Year 10 students, Samantha Stevens and Aiden Puglielli, set off on a period of exchange to France.  I recently received an e-mail from Sam letting me know how she is getting along and I thought that I would share a snippet of this with you:

“Hi Mr Sicari, My exchange is going really well, and I'm attending French school, which I thought you might find quite interesting. It starts at 8 in the morning, there’s an hour for lunch in the middle of the day, and then it finishes at 5. Most people get Wednesday afternoon off, but if you're unlucky as I am, Wednesday is the longest day but I get the end of Friday off.

It's so tiring! I come home exhausted.

Spanish class is fun though, my teacher kindly translates key words into English for me. I make mistakes in French but it’s Ok everyone else is making lots of mistakes in English and we are learning from one another and having lots of laughs along the way. So, I'm having a wonderful time.…”

Whilst Sam and Aiden aim to perfect their language skills I am certain that what they are learning the most is what happens outside of the classroom. Living in a home stay arrangement means that they are exposed to authentic French way of life and culture. I am certain that on their return they will report having had an amazing experience.

Vincent Sicari, Principal

Aus Volleyball Schools Cup

Congratulations to all students on a huge week of volleyball. All teams played very well in a very tough competition. Some of the more notable results were as follows. The Senior boys playing in the open men’s honours division defeated Aquinas to win a Bronze medal. The Under 16 girls’ honours team and the U/16 boys division 2 teams won a Silver medal. Full results will be available if you go to the Australian Volleyball Federation web page – www.avf.org.au  Aus volleyball schools cup – results. Thankyou to all the staff, students and ex-students who acted as coaches and managers during the week. Your involvement was greatly appreciated.

Winding down a little in the music department ... lessons and rehearsals are over for the year.  If you have any queries regards your child and the instrumental program, contact the music office on 9430 5127 or email Jill on bro@elthamhs.vic.edu.au

Wanting to sell an instrument?  The Music Support Group has a second hand instrument register.  First the instrument has to be checked by one of our staff, if given the tick of approval, it costs $10 to put on the register for next year's budding musicians to possibly purchase.  Again contact the music office with any queries regards this.

And ... from all the music staff, we wish our wonderful 'music' students, parents and families a relaxing, enjoyable and music filled Christmas and New Year!

If you have any queries, please contact the music office on 9430 5127

The builder is nearing completion of Stage 1 of the school redevelopment.  While there are many trades working hard to finish off the works, the new facilities will not be operational until the start of the 2012 school year.  The office staff, canteen, first aid and careers staff will move in over the Christmas break.

Between now and then there is still much to finish off.  There are carpenters, plasterers, painters, electrical and mechanical services, carpet layers toiling away to finish off the works.  The wait will be worthwhile.  The new facilities, even though they are still incomplete, they are certainly impressive.

The builders will be back in mid January to start Stage 2 works.  They will start with demolition of the old canteen, staff room and sick bay.   We are hopeful that the demolition work for stage 2 will be complete before students return to school.  The stage 2 works will produce 8 new learning spaces as well as adjoining open spaces and staff rooms and additional student toilets.   The overall completion date is July/August 2012.

For those members of our community who have indicated that they will become a shareholder of our new co-operative to fit out the new Performance Centre, thank you.  We almost have the numbers to start the process of forming the co-operative.  More information about how this is progressing will be provided during term 1.

Bruce Martyn – Project Officer

The Canteen will remain open until Wednesday 21st December with limited stock.

Please pre-order lunches where possible.

Note: There will be no lunch orders, rolls or sandwiches prepared from Friday 16th December.

Reminder – Thank you evening for the canteen volunteers will be held Monday 19/12 (please read notice in newsletter & RSVP)

Thank you

Gael & Canteen Staff
